3 Music videos
1.Adele- Hello
i. Artist- Adele, Producer- Greg Kurstin, Director- Xavier Dolan, Production Company- Believe Media/Sons of Manual/Metafilms
ii. Record Label- XL Recordings
iii. The target audiences for this song would be people above the age of 9 and between about 40 because young people might find the song boring or slow and people who are older might like this style of song.
iv. The narrative story behind this song is that Adele has the feeling that she is being forgotten by someone she hasn't seen in a long time so she is making out who she is and trying to get noticed.
v. The Sepia filter (green filter) was the most standing out in the music video and the cinematography like close up shots of characters are very important and clear in the music video because they show the feeling and atmosphere in the song.
There is a wide shot which shows the subject and her surroundings. This is effective and helps the audience see where the subject is and what and why she is doing what she is doing. This helps the audience understand the music video and the meaning behind it making them love it more.
There are many shot types which try to make the audience see the emotions of the subjects and the atmosphere changes each time the location changes. This extreme wide shot barely shows the audience the subject but makes the surroundings and the setting very clear. The leaves blowing out of control everywhere shows the audience that there is tension or a sort of anger.
As well as a extreme wide shot the shot also has a high angle making the subject seem overpowered and weak. This is effective because it shows the audience what the subject is feeling and that they are supposedly upset or feel weak.vi. Props that were included in this music video were normal ordinary life like home furniture and rooms. The lighting was not different the filter kept most of the things the same brightness and the costumes were basic as well.
vii. This music video is successful because the song has a nice and emotional meaning and the song lyrics link to the video and they are very effective for making the whole music video have a effect.
2. Justin Bieber- Love Yourself
I. Artist- Justin Bieber, Producer- Justin Bieber, Directors- Scott "Scooter" Braun, Parris Goebel, and Allison Kaye, Director- Parris Goebel, Production Company- SB Projects and Bieber Time Films.
ii. Def Jam and School Boy are the record labels
iii. I think the target audience for this song is teenage girls because Justin Bieber's songs are emotional and some girls can relate to this songs and feel the emotions he is trying to get across to the audience. Also the video is dancing and that dancing gives a story a very short but effective story.
iv. The story behind the song is clear because of the title 'Love Yourself'' It is about a girl who doesn't feel comfortable with herself and her 'boyfriend' is trying to make her realise that she is special and she should appreciate herself and love herself as much as he does and then he makes the message clear when he sends her a note that says 'Love Yourself'
v. The music video is pretty straight forward throughout there are no major special effects because I guess the director wants the audience to focus on the dancers and their performance. However the main effect that is clear is that as the feelings of the girl change the effect/colour changes like in the beginning and the end it is black and white and the rest is normal.
There are also a lot of close ups which give the audience a view of the subjects emotions and how they feel. This is effective because it moves the audience and makes them feel intrigued and they feel connected to the story and the characters.
There are high angles to show the subjects and their surroundings and what they are doing. This is effective because the audience can see the subjects clearly and how they act effects what the audience think about them and in this case because they are on a bed the audience might be interested to see whether it is morning or night.
There are also a lot of cuts from different scenes, which is effective to show the audience different thing fast and at different perspectives.
vi. The acting in this music video is very believable and you would thing it is a normal day and not a music video because of the ordinary looking props like a normal house, food and bed. The lighting is also effective because it looks like daylight and in one scene it is not daylight but it was effective because the light they used made it seem like they had a room light on which they probably did. They also added a birds eye view when the screen was showing 2 Iphones on the table with videos of dancing.
vii. This music video is successful because it makes scenes and has a catchy and calm tune to it and the song reminds you of a similar artist where the fans could like both the song and video because of the effectiveness in the dancing/acting
3. Ariana Grande- Focus
I. Artist- Ariana Grande, Producer- Brandon Bonfiglio, Director- Hannah Lux Davis, Production Company- London Alley Entertainment
ii. Record label- Republic
iii. The target audience to the Music video Focus by Ariana Grande is teenagers (female) Ariana Grande's songs attract a lot of young girls and they are all intrigued by her acting and her high voice. The music videos which Ariana Grande puts her songs into also attract young teenagers as her music videos are usually colourful and have a meaning behind them.
iv. Focus by Ariana Grande is about acceptance and focusing on someone on a deeper level–finding out who they really are beyond the way they look or their actions.
v. There are a lot of shot types and edits in this music video. There are a lot of cuts which lets the audience see a lot of things in a short time.
The cuts are fast and show small things, there are extreme close ups of The subjects body parts, this is effective because it shows the audience a detailed picture of the artist or the character to understand them.
The music video has a variety of camera shots including: Wide shot to show the position of the singer and where they are and what they are wearing as well as close ups to show the audience the facial features of the subject and their emotions. The music video also has effects and edits that make it seem interesting like duplicating the singer and her surroundings into that screen.
There are also different angles such as a low angle where the subject is shown from the camera looking at a low angle to the subject. This is effective because the audience can see the subject and the people around the subject clearly, looking at the audience from a high angle makes the subject seem confident and powerful which is what Ariana Grande was trying to show, that she's confident.
vi. The mise-en-scene in this music video is very clear because there are so many. There are different costumes on Ariana Grande they are not big character costumes they are just pretty dresses which she likes to wear. Not very casual but not too extreme either, maybe party outfits.
There is one main prop which stands out and that's the hollow cylinder which Ariana Grande sits in for most of the music video. This prop is effective and makes it interesting and unique. This means that the audience wouldn't expect much of a story behind the music video and would just enjoy it as new things appear. As for the lighting it is not clear where it is coming from but it is precise in showing the shadows of it. There are a lot of silhouettes in the music video whether it is of the subject or the props, the silhouettes are made because of a bright light behind them which is not very effective if it was supposed to be natural because it would look like a light bulb to the audience. However the silhouettes are effective because they give mystery to the singer and the song itself.
vii. The music video of focus is successful because there are elements of surprise and unique effects in the video. The music video shows a lot of things and shows the audience how much fun the people in it are having, because of the acting, which links to the upbeat music which makes the audience want to sing along.
