Music video Evaluation

For our music video we chose the song Faded by Alan Walker, we chose to do this song because the music video inspired us. Also the song has a nice rhythm and tune, it has a simple but meaningful story line. During my research I looked at music videos like Hello by Adele, this music video had a filter on throughout and this inspired us to put a black and white filter on our whole music video too. The music videos I researched also had a lot of different camera shot types to show the characters emotions and their actions.

We used shots like cut in and close up shot to give the audience a view of different parts of the character and their actions. This shot type is effective because it shows the audience what the character is doing. We also used close up shots to show the audience the characters emotions and expressions. We have added many wide shots to show the background and setting of the scene. We used a variety of shots this was effective because the audience can see the characters closely or far away, different shots give the audience different effects. So, when we use wide shots the audience can see the characters full body and read their body language.
At the beginning of the music video we used an over the shoulder shot to show the video to the audience in the perspective of the character. By seeing the video in the characters perspective the audience can feel more engaged in the music video and they can see what the character is doing and how they see it.
We also used different camera angles throughout the music video, we used high angles, low angles and eye level. We tried to use a variety of camera angles like high and low angles. The High angles we used make the character look vulnerable and scared because the camera or the audience is over powering them. It didn't take us very long to edit the video because we did not need to make many changes. We used a filter throughout the whole music video to make the audience be engaged with the video and it gives the video a different mood. As well as adding a filter we had to remove the original sounds of when we were recording the scenes. Also we changed the speed of some clips that we took to make it match the rhythm of the song and be in sync with it. For the edits and transitions we used fades and swipes and cuts. We mainly used these transitions because they show the audience that the same thing is happening in different places and areas. We used the fade transition in the beginning to show a sort of flashback and then we mainly used cuts to go through scenes quickly to match the beat of the song.
The target audience for our music video is teenagers or young adults, this is because the music video will appeal to these age groups. The music video has a beautiful narrative its simple and they will enjoy the music video along with the song because of the catchy beat and fast paced music video.
I think our music video was successful once we had edited it however I think what let the music video down was that it was repetitive and wasn't very exciting. On the other hand the music video did have effective effects and transitions that didn't make it look too fake and over done it almost looks professional.                                                                                                                                          We ran into many problems whilst producing our music video this includes filming and editing on the computer. The completed music video turned out perfect however this was not going to be our original music video. If you go back and look at our storyboard you can see that the story was different. One of the problems that we faced is we recorded good footage of what our narrative was supposed to be however, we did not upload our footage onto the computer, as soon as we were finished, therefor the next time we went to upload the footage it had been deleted. The footage was not uploaded onto the Mac therefor it wasn't backed up. Therefore we had to retake the footage but to make it simpler, we kept it in the similar setting and changed the story line a bit. The original story of our music video ended in a graveyard however because that footage was deleted we did not have the time to recreate the same footage therefor we edited the original story a bit. We edited the ending and still made it effective and match the narrative.
Another problem we faced whilst filming our music video is that the first time we filmed all the scenes on a different camera the quality was poor. Our camera was a Kodak easyshare Camera with 14 Mega Pixels. On the camera itself the footage looked as if it had good and high quality footage however when we uploaded the footage onto the mac the quality was terrible. Because the quality was so bad we couldn't make out some of the footage or scenes. Therefore had to start again even though we filmed all our scenes already.
In some cases we could have made do with footage that was only a bit blurry however this was poor and some effects were not even visible.
For example in this screenshot of the footage you can see smoke (as an effect) however it is not as clear as it would have been. This type of quality is not effective in producing a music video because the audience would not like it and they wouldn't be able to make out what some things were.

Because we didn't have another camera to film on we borrowed the school camera which is a Canon 1200D. This camera had much better quality and once we uploaded the footage onto the macs it was great as well. The footage that we took had good enough quality that we used it in our music video. If we were to make this music video again I think we should be more creative and imaginative with the narrative and we should have more performance in the music video. To make the video more visually appealing to the audience I think we should have added a fictional narrative with more edits and costumes. This would be effective because usually people only listen to the song and the video doesn't interest them however if the music video was visually effective and creative the audience would be interested and would want to watch it.
In conclusion I think that our music video was effective because it had the right edits and transitions which was effective because it made sense and matched the song theme. Also I think that our target audience, teenagers and young adults, will like it because of the narrative and because its simple and they can look at the transitions and effects put into the music video.
